Traditional wood fired Aka-Shino chaire made by the late Kato Yasukage XIV prior to changing his name to Yasukage and thus the box is signed Kato Shoji. Elegant and traditional in form with quick, gestural spatula marks on the front and back the rich, nearly crimson iron surface is painted with a nice dusting of wood ash from the wood firing with throwing marks adding to the overall decoration...

Distinctly fired mizusashi resembling stacked stones, this Sueki influenced Shigaraki mizusashi is absolutely timeless having the appearance of a piece medieval pot or a modern, abstract sculpture based on stones placed on top of one another. Made by Takahashi Makoto this feudal pot was fired in an anagama where it partially sat in a charcoal bed imbuing the piece with a variety of grey and stone colors with areas of rich ash having a pate-de-verre style surface at several points...

Large Ko-Iga style chawan by veteran potter, Kojima Kenji. This broad bowl has a wonderful posture with a gentle, undulating lip and a face and part of the interior coated in a soft green ash with a rich pool of deep green ash formed from the bowl being fired at a slight angle. The interior mikomi and exterior kodai are both very well executed adding to a chawan that was well handled in both the throwing and firing of the piece...

Phenomenal and classic Mino-Iga style vase with unquestionably the finest wood fired surface I have ever seen by Mizuno Takuzo. Large and solitary in its presence, the wide array of textures and coloration paints a unique and powerful form that few can achieve and I doubt I will see a pot with this varied a surface again the ferocity of the firing process is written across the surface...

Vivid texture and color variations paint this bold swirl platter by Shigaraki and Oribe specialist, Yamaguchi Yoshinari. Made of a tight buff-white stoneware the Oribe glaze has created varying hues of green depending on the thickness of the glaze with high points having a brighter surface and a thick pool of green glass in the center of the plate with rich blue-green tones where the copper has become over-saturated...

Tall and imposing Hagi vase form made by kurinuki master, Kaneta Masanao. At over 14" tall, the vessel is impressive and commands its space much like an ancient medieval citadel. The pot is glazed in a Shiro-Hagi glaze that has significant areas of blushed pinkish hues over half of the form and vivid areas of intense white speckles adorning the absolute purity of the form...

Dark and rich Ao glazed teabowl over a thickly slipped and combed, kushime surface. The teabowl is made out of a dark iron bearing clay that I made myself and is altered and the foot is hand cut using a sharpened piece of bamboo.

Large and impressive hikidashi-kuro, black Bizen chawan by Akiya masao. Measuring 14 x 11 cm, the chawan is in perfect condition with original signed box and is quite a wonderful handful. The surface is rich with wet ash on the exterior and interior and the surface is also decorated with diagonal slashes that add to the tactile quality.

Akiya Masao was born near Tokyo and after completing college at the Toyo Institute of Art embarked on a path to become a full time Bizen potter...
