This unusual Bizen chawan was made Sakauchi Ensen (b. 1922) of Okayama Prefecture and is unique even among the richly diverse styles of Bizen-yaki. Sakauchi calls this style Hishoku Nanban-yaki, secret color unglazed (nanban) pottery which is different than any other Bizen of its time or since. This unique and exotic dai-kannyu Hagi chawan was made by Yamato Tsutomu, son of the Hagi legend, Yamato Yasuo. Made of classic Hagi clay with thick crackle slip put on the clay, an ash based glaze is then used to complete this rather modern Hagi chawan which follows admirably in the footsteps of his father and teacher. This very robust and Momoyama influenced vase was made by Mino potter and part magician, Hori Ichiro. Thrown out of a grainy, off white mogusa clay and decorated in blades of grass on the front and side, the pot was finished off with Hori's classic Shino glaze and fired in his wood kiln. Though difficult to see in the photos, there is a sheen around the neck, mouth and other areas created by a very thin layer of ash has adhered to the surface making for a very interesting addition to the glaze. ...

This large and rather colorful kohiki chawan was made by Ogawa Tetsuo a specialist in slips and Korean slipware of which this pot is a classic example. The surface of the teabowl shows off a wide array of colors and visual textures with areas of gohonde fawn spots and a translucent, waxy ash glaze coving the pot. This large and highly animated E-Shino mizusashi was made by internationally known and exhibited potter, Suzuki Goro. Made in Suzuki's classic "free wheeling" style, the careful use of iron under the glaze and the glaze itself has painted a Momoyama ink painting style image in a rather monumental way. Classic and robust Iga Mizusashi made by Tsujimura Shiro who needs no introduction. Powerfully thrown out of a whitish stoneware clay and fired in an anagama, this mizusashi is covered in ash with a small area of blushing on the read and rivulets of ash cascading down the face. The form of this pot is textbook Tsujimura Shiro and shows great reverence to medieval pieces while clearly showing his own unique style.

At nearly 13" tall, this large Persian blue style glazed vase cuts a great figure flanked by bold and detailed brushed of owls rendered within medallions and further detailed with patterns of decoration and faint gold accents to complete the piece. The full form is finished off with an elegant and purposeful neck that adds to the vertical nature of the vase without taking anything away from the presented brushwork and design under this attractive glaze.

This creative and impressive Mughal dagger was made by Ron Frazier (1940-2011) who endeavored to make knives in a distinctly pre-modern style and manner which clearly shows in his knives. Rich gosu blue glaze covers this stoneware chawan with three areas of lyrical slip trailed decoration around the bowl. Made by the great-grandson of Kawai Kanjiro, this chawan by Kawai Sota is an excellent example of his work and the current direction of the Kawai-mon now approaching a century of tradition.
