This unusual Bizen chawan was made Sakauchi Ensen (b. 1922) of Okayama Prefecture and is unique even among the richly diverse styles of Bizen-yaki. Sakauchi calls this style Hishoku Nanban-yaki, secret color unglazed (nanban) pottery which is different than any other Bizen of its time or since. This chawan was fired upside down as evidenced by the rich, accumulated ash drips on the mouth and is covered in a variety of thick, colorful textured on the exterior and interior of the bowl. Finely pott...

This unique and exotic dai-kannyu Hagi chawan was made by Yamato Tsutomu, son of the Hagi legend, Yamato Yasuo. Made of classic Hagi clay with thick crackle slip put on the clay, an ash based glaze is then used to complete this rather modern Hagi chawan which follows admirably in the footsteps of his father and teacher. This chawan has a wonderful range of colors and feels great in the hand, truly a tactile experience while being visually engaging. This dai-kannyu style was pioneered by his fath...

This very robust and Momoyama influenced vase was made by Mino potter and part magician, Hori Ichiro. Thrown out of a grainy, off white mogusa clay and decorated in blades of grass on the front and side, the pot was finished off with Hori's classic Shino glaze and fired in his wood kiln. Though difficult to see in the photos, there is a sheen around the neck, mouth and other areas created by a very thin layer of ash has adhered to the surface making for a very interesting addition to the glaze. ...

This large and rather colorful kohiki chawan was made by Ogawa Tetsuo a specialist in slips and Korean slipware of which this pot is a classic example. The surface of the teabowl shows off a wide array of colors and visual textures with areas of gohonde fawn spots and a translucent, waxy ash glaze coving the pot. The richness of the surface makes this a rather stunning piece by Ogawa with much more activity than seen in many of his teabowls. The kodai is carefully crafted with a blend of colors ...

This large and highly animated E-Shino mizusashi was made by internationally known and exhibited potter, Suzuki Goro. Made in Suzuki's classic "free wheeling" style, the careful use of iron under the glaze and the glaze itself has painted a Momoyama ink painting style image in a rather monumental way. Thrown quickly and thickly, the pot has areas of smooth and rough which balance the form rather well and the pot is finished with strong lugs and a large and functional knob on the lid. This mizusa...

Classic and robust Iga Mizusashi made by Tsujimura Shiro who needs no introduction. Powerfully thrown out of a whitish stoneware clay and fired in an anagama, this mizusashi is covered in ash with a small area of blushing on the read and rivulets of ash cascading down the face. The form of this pot is textbook Tsujimura Shiro and shows great reverence to medieval pieces while clearly showing his own unique style.

This fiercely medieval style tokkuri was made by Echizen standout Nishiura Takeshi (b.1941) and in form and surface it is everything that classic modern Echizen is about. Using indigenous Echizen clay, local woods and firing a distinctly traditional Echizen kiln, Nishiura creates works that are in direct lineage back to the medieval times while adding his own voice to both form and surface. This tokkuri has a pleasantly fullness to the form and is finished in a wonderful array of wood fired affe...

This is a large and elegant salt fired enyu with a provocative crackle slip surface creating a wide array of textures and various color hues that make for a splendid chawan. measuring in at 14.2 x 8.6cm, this chawan was created by Tokoname mainstay, Ito Yushi and is rather typical of this style for which he is well known.
