Classical Iga mizusashi by noted master Japanese potter; Kishimoto Kennin (b.1934). This mizusashi, based on Momoyama and early Edo Iga archetypes, sports a rugged purpose with a reliance on tradition while not being a slave to it. In a tea room or on a shelf this pot has both a commanding presence and impressive volume . The mouth and shoulder are bordered in a rich green coat of green glassy ash which cascades down most of the face of the pot and settles in and around the shoulder, interior mo...

Obviously a well conceived form, this box was made by the son of legendary Mashiko potter, Sakuma Totaro, Sakuma Kenji.. The form, finish, lid and foot can easily lead to the Mashiko style and Sakuma in particular. All in all a very well conceived piece by the son of a pottery legend.

As if cut from a solid block of clay, this bowl appears to be constructed of intersecting planes, though the chawan was first thrown, altered and cut, mentori style. This modern chawan is by master innovator and Bizen potter, Kakurezaki Ryuichi. Apprenticed to Isezaki Jun, he learned the traditional methods of Bizen pottery and firing and has added so much more to his style and vision of clay. This teabowl has a wet surface of ash about the whole piece creating a nearly uniform coat of a shiny r...

Serene Hagi chawan by veteran Yamaguchi Prefecture potter, Okada Yu (b.1941). Thrown of a rich daido clay and covered with first a slip and than an ash glaze, this chawan was fired in a wood fired climbing kiln the way that Hagi has been fired for centuries. This particular chawan has all the attributes and landscape desired by tea aficionados and Okada is very well known for making exceptional chadogu, tea ceremony implements.

Okada Yu, changed his name from Yutaka in 2004 and is a Yamag...

This chawan represents a modern retelling of Tamba (Tanba) pottery and is by one of the new generation potters; Imanishi Masahiko (b. 1971). This glazed chawan was pulled out of a red hot kiln, hikidashi style and the frozen surface is a wide variety of colors and tones including bidoro green, blue, black and shimmering silver-grey on the foot. The wet surface has a real depth to it making for a rather unique and rarely seen style. Imanishi Masahiko is part of the modern movement in Tamba creat...

Large abstract mentori, faceted Oribe chawan by contemporary pottery phenom; Ishii Takahiro. This very contemporary style chawan is glazed in Ishii’s vivid Oribe glaze that shimmers with iridescence and allows plenty of the tsuchi-aji to peak through as he glazed the pot. Some areas of the bare clay show hi-iro caused from the fuming shells the pot was fired on. Balanced on a well addressed circular kodai, this chawan is equally at home displayed or in the hand. The mentori form feels great t...

This classic mizusashi has everything one could want from Karatsu; a timeless form, a perfect nuka surface and exceptional E-Garatsu style iron underglaze painting by a master potter and arguably the greatest living Karatsu artist. This pot could easily be a 17th century piece though the unmistakable mark of a master 20th century potter is ever present. The beautiful Karatsu chirimen kodai is what sets this pot apart from most and Tanaka Sajiro creates a foot like no other.
