Large and impressive Iga chawan by rising Iga-yaki star, Atarashi Manabu. The surface of this chawan is covered in a sheet of glass and there is wonderful bidoro drips and clam shell impressions where the chawan was fired on its side. The kodai, foot is wonderfully sculpted and fits well into the hand when in use.
Atarashi Manabu is one of the new generation of Iga and Shigaraki potters who is reinvigorating these ancient traditions. He studied with his father, Atarashi Kanji and uncle (?) Atarashi Keizo and he is exhibiting at fine galleries and exhibits throughout Japan. His work sells out very quickly.
This chawan is in excellent condition and was made in early 2011, measures 5.6" x 3.8" and is complete with signed box, stamped cloth and toreki biography sheet.
