SOLD - THANK YOU!
A very beautiful vintage Mexican silver brooch or pendant an Aztec portrait of a face. The proportions and details are excellent and the niello work(blackened) really makes the 3-dimensional aspect pop although the face is held 'off' of the back this too makes the 3D pop. Cheo is a listed artist but we do not know as much as we should about them.
Mark: HENCHO EN MEXICO. TAXCO. CHEO (SCRIPT) Eagle 3.
Measurements: 42.63mm / 1.67” round, 7.62mm thick without the closure.
Weight: 18.01 Grams.
Condition: Excellent vintage condition, The center of the forehead, a small strip looks faded if so it is Niello work and not tarnish but It is difficult to tell unless compared to the exact same piece side by side. Very light normal surface wear- near perfect.
NOTE: A nearly identical piece by another artist is pictured in the book Mexican Silver Modern Hand-Wrought Jewelry and Metal Work by Penny Chittim Morrill and Carole A. Berk, 4th Edition (Schiffer Books for Collectors) page 100.
There is a small write up about Cheo is the book The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks (third edition) by Bille Hougart pages 46.
Layaway always welcomed.
