DESCRIPTION: A larger size Chinese chest in a vernacular or “Chinese country” style, made from elmwood (jumu) and lacquered red, with an attractive “key fret” patterned bottom stretcher. Rounded bevel panels have been carved on the two sides, the drawer fronts and the two doors which swing open on brass hinges to reveal generous storage space. Handmade in Shanxi Province using traditional Chinese methods of joinery (no nails, only joints), these chests make vibrant accent pieces and add Chinese appeal to any room in the house. The construction is very solid and the entire cabinet is in excellent condition, with age-appropriate wear showing the darker undercoating in places; C. 1800 – 1920. DIMENSIONS: 38 ¾” wide (98.5 cm) x 21 ¼” deep (54 cm) x 33 ½” high (85 cm).
