A beautiful sterling and turquoise match holder and tray by Frank Patania Sr. (1899-1964). Born in Italy, this silversmith came to the U.S. at an early age settling in the Southwest and achieved great recognition for his blending of European and Native American design. The pieces are elegant and sophisticated in their simplicity. The oval cabachon turquoise have a bezel of tiny silver beading. The stones provide the focal point for these fine pieces. The tray measures 5 3/8" diameter and the match holder measures 2 3/8" by 1 1/2". Both pieces are hallmarked sterling and the the Frank Patania Sr. Thunderbird as shown in the photo. The match holder is additionally hallmarked FP. Both pieces are in fine original condition and weigh a total of 154 grams. Pieces by Frank Patania Sr. can be found in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C.
