Beautiful cased table medal of Count Franz Conrad von Hötzendorf dated 1914-1915. Wonderfully depicted bronze by the Austrian artist Arnold Hartig. The obverse shows Count Franz Conrad von Hötzendorf in profile with medals and uniform coat. Reverse shows Hötzendorf in medieval armor and long sword preparing to fend off an impressive dragon. This is probably reference to his defense of Austria and the Russian offensive of 1914. Leading up to the war he was a significant military reformist and his star was at its zenith with that action. After that he was largely unsuccessful and was a proponent of lessening German influence and leadership in the war in favor of a stronger Austrian contribution. Medal is about 6.5cm in diameter. Box measures about 9.5 x 9.5 cm. Lid and bottom of box are loosely attached. This is because the fabric connection is undamaged but the hinge pins are missing so should be easily fixable. The front catch is also missing. Otherwise the box is in terrific shape with only minimal age wear. Really an impressive looking medal.
