What a wonderful item celebrating its 100th anniversary. As the British were approaching Christmas in the first year of the war Princess Mary commissioned these to be made and sent to British soldiers. There were far too many in uniform to all get one so there was a prioritization method. Princess Mary went to great effort to show her appreciation and solidarity to British soldiers in many other ways including visiting the wounded in hospitals. There are some sites with great information available on this topic and the 1914 Christmas tins in particular. This was, of course, before the full horror of the war was evident to all. Just a wonderful, early WWI item. Worn condition with a few gentle bends but still very nice and uncleaned.
