As collectors we know there are many Japanese military sake cups out there. And even trays for military sake sets. Far scarcer are military sake cup holders. This is the second I have had. Measuring about 9x8cm this holder is presented in the shape of an unfurled Japanese war flag with strong paint and only one short, light scratch in one of the red rays. The reverse has four kanji characters that are not clear enough to read. In the circle is the maker logo reading "Mikiyama". Stamped in ink is Japan which indicates that at some point it was sold outside of Japan as export merchandise. Stamping country of origin is a weird science and ultimately means little. It doesn't show in the images but there is a very pleasant crackled glaze texture throughout. Overall a very attractive patriotic piece seldom encountered. This is actually only the second sake cup holder I have ever owned ad should be a great addition to almost any WWII Japanese display.
