A Roman silver ring with oval, D-section hoop, widening towards the rounded shoulders. The ring has an ellipsoid bezel with inscription in Latin 'VOT’ i.e. 'a gift for'.
Circa 2nd century AD.
Fine condition
Width 22 mms (0.86 ins).
Internal diameter 11.8 x 17.2 mms. Approximate size British G, USA 3 ¼.
Property of a gentleman from Vienna; from his private collection formed since 1970.

The ring belongs to type V of the Ruseva-Slokoska classification.
Some rings were votive in nature, with a text expressing a plea for salvation, a promised votive offering or eulogy for happiness and welfare.
