Pair of blue and white wine cups

Early 18th century
Kangxi period, Qing dynasty
Porcelain with underglaze cobalt painting; Jingdezhen ware
H: 4.2 cm D: 7 cm
One cup with tiny hairline, the other perfect; rim fritting as typical of Kangxi wares
From a private collection in Scarborough, Maine

The Kangxi reign is frequently lauded by scholars and collectors as a golden period during which export and minyao (folk) wares reached new heights in artistic and technical quality. This pair of wine cups certainly represent well the quality of Kangxi wares with their fine paste, jade-like glaze, and excellent cobalt blue. What these cups lack in size they make up in charm: there is a wonderful naiveté about the way the daisies and landscapes are drawn with such quick but simple confidence.
