Blue and white bowl with landscapes, flora, and fauna
Late 18th century
Qianlong period, Qing dynasty
Porcelain with underglaze colbalt blue; Jingdezhen ware
H: 7 cm D: 13.8 cm
long hairlines; loss of gilding; was never fully broken and displays fine
From a Marion, MA estate

This bowl is one of the rarer Qianlong-period blue and white export bowls I've come across. The complicated fluted shape is finely executed, and the alternating cartouches featuring Chinese landscapes and insects with flora is very beautiful. The gilding is bright and fine. All in all, a nice display piece. What's interesting is that Qianlong period landscapes such as the ones seen on this bowl were understood to be so representative of China that it inspired Thomas Minton to formulate his own interpretation—the ever ubiquitous “willow” pattern.
