Famille rose brushwasher in millefleur pattern
mid-late 19th century
Tongzhi-Guangxu period, Qing dynasty
Porcelain with famille rose enamels; Jingdezhen ware
D: 14.5 cm H: 10 cm
Good condition: some chips on one of the chilong's legs
From a Cape Cod, MA estate

This piece could either be considered a brushwasher or a vase in the “apple zun” shape. In any case the pairing of millefleur (popular since the Qianlong period) and roaming chilong (popular since the Kangxi period) is pleasing and well-rendered. There were copies of this type of ware in the Republic period, but those reproductions suffer overall from poor quality. This brushwasher, on the other hand, enjoys thick and excellent enamels, careful painting, and delightfully meticulous sculpting.
