Tongzhi period, Qing dynasty
Porcelain with famille rose enamels; Jingdezhen ware
W: 15.5 cm H: 8.5 cm
Perfect condition, some minute wear on enamels
From a East Dennis, MA private collection
Tongzhi period porcelain is well-known for domestic and export wares bearing the “wu shuang pu” (narrative without a double) in illustrated and written format. In the case of this creamer, the story of Wu Ze Tian, the only official female emperor in Chinese history, is laid out in carefully written calligraphy and finely rendered illustrations. Additionally, the handle is decorated with the “three friends of winter” motif (pine, pum blossoms, and bamboo.) The border and interior feature butterflies, peaches, pomegranates, and floral sprays in an overall message for abundance and prosperity.
