Jingdezhen potters really took overglaze enameling to new heights during the Kangxi period. Overglaze enameling stretches all the way back to the early Ming, and enjoyed development during the Chenghua period. However, colors were restricted to overglaze red, green, and yellow. The early 18th century then saw an explosion of novel enamel colors, the expanded color palate available were put to good use in the creation of giant famille verte / wucai vases such as this one.
What I love about Kangxi famille verte / wucai is its ability to capture Chinese life with such brilliant swirls of color. Whereas later imperial wares leans towards the decorative and the stylized, Kangxi wucai / famille verte is rich with folk flavor. Take this vase for example: its neck shows a pagoda half hidden within clouds under a network of constellations; its four panels explains the ideals for feminine beauty in Kangxi period culture. Graceful and talented, these willowy beauties engage in various intellectual and artistic pursuits from playing Chinese chess, to playing the zither, to reading, and to painting.
