Late 19th century, circa 1860-1900
Tongzhi - Guangxu Period, Qing Dynasty
Porcelain with overglaze famille rose enamels, hardwood
Just plaque- h: 17.6 cm, w: 10.5 cm; with stand - h: 22.9 cm, w: 12 cm
Nearly perfect condition, age wear to enamels From a Palm Beach, Florida collection
Although the late Qing period saw a marked decline in the quality of porcelains produced, many surviving pieces nonetheless feature charming and humorous portrayals of Chinese life. The faces painted on this plaque are exaggerated and rather naive, while the lower right corner features an incense burner looking hilariously like an UFO. The exposed clay biscuit to reverse is very typical of the mid-late 19th century. The wood plaque stand is included.
