ca. 1720s, early 18th century
Late Kangxi Period, Qing Dynasty
Porcelain with overglaze famille verte enamels
Diameter: 22.8 cm / 9 in
From a St. Columb, UK private collection
A nice late Kangxi famille verte export porcelain plate, possibly for the French market, featuring a bold pine tree rising out of a penjing jardiniere with lingzhi fungi and scholar's rocks. Despite the rococo sensibility of the floral border, the central scene is decidedly in the Chinese taste; pines have long been admired by the Chinese for its strength and nobility of character, and is a common symbol for the literati classes. The potted pine tree is a popular theme in Chinese literati painting of the 15-18th centuries.
Condition: Good antique condition. Surface wear to enamels. Fleabites to the foot. Two flaws at the rim (see pictures with the pink arrows). [Please examine all photos carefully, as they are part of the condition report.]
