Description: A large matching pair of 19th c square sectional vases, enameled in the wucai / famille verte palette with landscapes and lively Daoist figures riding horses, lions, elephants, and other mythical auspicious beasts. In one of the panels, a figure riding a qilin raises towards the sky a gourd and spirit “trail” usually associated with the Daoist immortal Quan Zhongli. Yet what is curious is that the majority of the depicted figures appear to “foreigners”, as their curling red hair and exaggerated features are common visual cues in Chinese art to signal non-Han Chinese ethnicity.

Condition: perfect antique condition. [Please examine all photos carefully, as they are part of the condition report.]
