This unusually shaped carved bone snuff bottle is a late Meiji period (1867~1911) product. It is 2 3/4” long, 1 ¼” wide and ¾” thick. It depicts a curled shrimp as the body of snuff bottle. The bamboo spoon is a replacement. It has a great patina and is in great condition.

This hand painted blue and white statue of standing Hotei is a Taisho period (1912~1926) product. It is 6 ¾” high, 4” wide and 3” thick. In Japanese or Chinese culture, Hotei (Budai in Chinese) is an immortal who is always shown smiling or laughing and carrying a huge cloth bag. This late Meiji white molded ceramic netsuke is 1 5/8” long, 1” high and 1 ¼” wide. It depicts a reclining Shi Shi (lion) with its mouth wide open and a loose ball inside. Aside from some tiny black spots due to the firing, it is in very good condition.

This Japanese walrus tusk carving of a young maiden is a late-19th century or early 20th century product. It is 7 ¼” high (8 7/8” high with wood base) and 2 ¾” wide. It depicts a young maiden holding a long necked vase in one hand and a long stemmed flower in her other hand. There is a tall stand beside her with an incense burner. The statue is permanently mounted on the carved wood base. It is in great condition.

This nicely executed ivory carving of a geisha is a late Meiji period (1868~1911) product. It depicts a formally dressed geisha holding a flower in her right hand and an umbrella in her left hand. It is 6 ¼” high, 1 ¾” wide and 1 ½” thick. The artist’s signature, “Masayuki,” is on the bottom. Aside from some hair line cracks due to age, it is in great condition.

This nice Japanese carved ivory Okimono group is an early 20th century piece. The base is 9” long and 6 ½“ wide. The sitting merchant is 4 ¾” tall, 3” wide and 2 ½“ in depth. It depicts a smiling old man holding a tobacco pipe and displaying his merchandise in the market. The signature is placed on a small red rectangular hard stone which is inlayed on an oval ivory piece. It reads “SHOZAN”. It is in excellent condition.

This interesting Japanese carved ivory netsuke is a late 19th or early 20th century product. It depicts a female figure (perhaps Okame, also known as Uzume or Otafuku, goddess of mirth) carrying a long armed monkey on her back. A younger monkey is sitting in front of her with both arms raised to grasp the hands of the older monkey. It is 2 ¾” high, ¾” wide and ½” thick. The artist signature “Meigyoku” is on the bottom. This rare Japanese bronze incense burner is a mid or late Meiji period product. It depicts a crane resting on an upside down lotus leaf. A small snail is sitting on the leaf as well. The hollow body of the crane is used as burner; the wings can be removed to put incense inside. The open beak and small holes under the feathers will let the smoke out. This very nicely carved 19th century lacquered wood netsuke in a clam form is 1 1/8” high, 1 ¾” from the widest part and 1 ½” in depth. It depicts two elders playing “go” in a building and the third person standing on a bridge outside the house. A tall pine tree is along side of the building. This 19th century carved wood netsuke of an Otafuku (traditional female theater character) is 2 ¼” long, 1 ¾” wide and 1” thick. It was made by a well known wood netsuke carver Shuzan; his signature is on the back. Shuzan was the pupil of master netsuke carver Shugetsu. It is in excellent condition.
