This is a fine quality Madara style Karatsu chawan (tea bowl) in the Japanese taste by one of the finest late 20th century Karatsu potters working in Japan, Nakagawa Jinembo (1953~2011). The chawan is signed on the bottom by the foot. Since the original box was lost, the chawan comes with an attested and signed box by noted authority and dealer of Japanese ceramics, Robert Yellin. The lower price of $2800 reflects the replacement box as his Madara chawan with original signed boxes sold well at an exhibition at the prestigious Shibuya Kurodatoen Gallery in Japan last fall for $4100. It is 3” high and 5 ¼” in diameter and is in excellent condition.
