This very finely shaped and fired Shigaraki style katakuchi (open topped sake pourer) was made by Furutani Kazuya (b.1976) who is the eldest son of the noted Shigaraki and Iga potter, Furutani Michio. Michio was noted for building over 30 kilns during his lifetime and was celebrated for being one of the potters who helped renew the popularity of the Shigaraki style. His son Kazuya has followed in his footsteps and is noted for the high quality of his firings. The piece is 3 /3/4” high and 4 3/8” from the widest part. The artist name and seal are on the top of the original wood box; his name is on the side close to the bottom of the pourer. It is in excellent condition.
