This early 20th century carved ivory Buddha statue (Japanese called Hotai) is 6 ¼ inches tall, 3 ¾ inches wide and 3 ¼ inches in depth. The whole statue was carved from one solid ivory tusk. The left hand of the Buddha is holding a small fan; his right hand is resting on his knee. He wears a twisted necklace and earrings and has a big smile on his face. This is not like a traditional Buddha image; it is more of an off center imagination from the artist. There are a few hair crack lines; it is still in excellent shape.
