Charming toggle of a monkey protectively holding its baby between his arms.
Traditionally in China, monkey is the symbol for promotion, success in the civil service; in this case, with its baby, the meaning is: hope for successful descendants.
Quite rare « triangular » shape with a large and flat back ; wonderful smooth patina, very good condition (1 foot partially broken as always in this type of toggles when very old).
China, at least 18th C. (end of Ming?), 3,8 x 2,8 cms. TCT 114-151 (see bibliography).
