Daphna Ben-Tor, “The Scarab: A Reflection of Ancient Egypt” (Jerusalem:1993) pg. 28-33.
Scarabs of this type can be dated from the Early Middle Kingdom to the end of the Second Intermediate Period and have been found in numerous locations in Egypt and modern Palestine.
Used primarily as a seal the hieroglyphic inscription also suggests a protective or amuletic quality attributed to the scarab.
