Scarabs of this type can be dated from the Early Middle Kingdom to the end of the Second Intermediate Period and have been found in numerous locations in Egypt and modern Palestine.
The hieroglyphs on scarabs of this type do not form into words and were used for their amuletic qualities. They generally contain blessings of an assertion of the Pharaoh's power.
