M.D. ("Model Dari" = Model From) E. Van Zuylen, by OEY KEK HWA (signature).
This is a first generation Oey Kek Hwa, circa 1940s.
Her signature is done in dots instead of long form letters.
The colour is soft pink and the detailing on the "Tumpal" (Head) of the "Sarung" (the ends of the fabric is stitched together forming a tube, to be worn as "sarung") is worthy of close inspection.
Please refer to pictures with a pen to get an idea of size of details.
E. Van Zuylen was a renown Indo-Dutch batik maker who lived in Java Island around the turn of the 20th century. Her style is typically clean and solid background, with European influenced designs and bright pastel colours made of synthetic dye which became more common at the time. You can spot her design almost immediately and consistently her unique style, her "Model", is known to have been used by several Indonesian-Chinese batik makers with her permission, and this one is the work of Oey Kek Hwa.
CONDITION: Some black brush marks which I was assured can easily be removed by gently gently washing with gentle body soap or the fruit "Lerak".
