The underglaze blue decoration has been stamped on and has fired more to black than blue. To the inner surface is a circle where the glaze has been wiped away, allowing a stack of bowls to be fired in the kiln inside each other without being fused together. Chinese Blue & White Porcelain Bowl – Tek Sing Shipwreck c.1822

This bowl was recovered from the Tek Sing shipwreck, the cargo of which was sold at Nagel’s auctioneers in Germany in 2000. The underglaze blue decoration features a stamped pattern of what appears to be a mountainous countryside scene. Such bowls were stacked on top of each other in the kiln and so the central inner surface remains unglazed in order to prevent them from fusing together during firing.
