Two Chinese 17th Century Vung Tau Shipwreck Bowls (Ex. Christie's)

These two porcelain bowls were recovered from the "Vung Tau" shipwreck, dated to c. 1690. The darker of the two bowls is more "thinly-potted" than the other and has Chinese characters in underglaze blue. This small jar, or jarlet, was made during the 11th -12th Century. The glaze is a very dark olive-green, verging on black, It falls just short of the flat base. The base edge is a little chipped at the glaze, clearly from where it was removed from the kiln after firing. There are a few small "nibbles" to the mouth edge. No repair or restoration.
