Rare Vietnamese 15th Century Blue & White Jar

This rare jar was made during the 15th century. It is "heavily-potted" and has quite a wide body for its height. It has three unusual "twisted" loop handles placed equidistant around the shoulder. The underglaze blue decoration covers the whole of the body and comprises lotus flowers and leaf designs.

Height 10 cm. Although not at all obvious, close examination does show the mouth to have been restored.

This bowl was made during the 13th-14th century. It has a slightly flared rim and has been decorated in underglaze iron-brown, quite thinly in places, with floral and scrolling patterns. Two Chinese 17th Century Vung Tau Shipwreck Bowls (Ex. Christie's)

These two porcelain bowls were recovered from the "Vung Tau" shipwreck, dated to c. 1690. The darker of the two bowls is more "thinly-potted" than the other and has Chinese characters in underglaze blue.
