Chinese Song / Yuan Dynasty Pottery Buddhist Zodiac Jar

This interesting pottery jar was made during the Song Dynasty (AD 960 - 1279), or possibly the Yuan Dynasty (AD 1279 - 1368) and has been been excavated from a Buddhist site in Yunnan province.

This jar is quite "heavily-potted" for its type. The wall of the jar has been decorated with six lotus leaf panels within which are moulded and applied human figures and zodiac animals. The cover has been decorated with an incised five-pointed star pattern. On the underside of the cover are faint traces of Sanskrit-type characters in red pigment.

Height 23.5 cm (9.25 inches). A very nice example with no restoration or repair in fine condition.

This jar is from our own collection of Buddhist vessels from Yunnan that we have collected over several years and not previously offered for sale.
