A Drawing Manual for Schools by Asai Chu. Pub. 1898 Vol. 8
10 1/8 x 7 1/8 ins. (25.7 x 18.2 cms) The Japanese title is Chugaku Edehon, this being the second printing of Meiji 31 (1898), the original printing was in 1895. The Japanese Education Ministry, the Monbusho, had commissioned Asai Chu (1856-1907), one of the foremost artists and educators of the day, to create a series of such handbooks for schools giving instruction in Western methods. Several volumes of the lithographically printed series dealt with pencil drawing, the present volume with watercolour painting. They were published by Kinkodo Shoseki in Tokyo. The series has become scarce due to intensive use in school and rather inadequate bindings. The present volume has clearly been used as there are minor traces of watercolour pigments on the cover and reverse of some plates.
The collation is 2pp introductory text + 8 chromolithographic plates + 1p colophon.
The condition is unusually good, the binding tight and some light foxing on the face of the first plate and mainly on the reverse of several plates.
