Chinese Song Dynasty Stoneware Dragon Jar (AD 960 - 1279)

This interesting stoneware jar was made during the Song Dynasty (AD 960 -1279). It is "heavily-potted" and has an applied decoration around its shoulder featuring a dragon chasing a pearl; the dragon, of course, seen as a divine mystical creature and the pearl a symbol of strength, fortune and transformation. It is coated in a thick dark iron-brown glaze, that falls short of the base of the jar, on top of a pale slip.

Height 19 cm (7.5 inches). Condition is very good; there is a small chip to the mouth edge and to the finer ends of the protruding appliqués but there is no repair or restoration.

Our last image shows other jars of this type that we are offering for sale separately: these jars have all been excavated from Sichuan province.
