Large Japanese Stoneware Blue & White Seto Ware Dish. Meiji Period
Diam. 12 3/8 ins. (31.4 cms) These large blue and white mingei dishes decorated exclusively in underglaze cobalt are rarely seen and do not seem to feature in reference books either in the West or in Japan. Most Seto dishes with underglaze blue also have underglaze iron in the design. The dish has 8 spur marks on the interior these wares having been fired in stacks. It dates from the second half of the 19th. century.
The dish is in good condition, with no repairs. There are a few minor flakes and chips around the rim and the various firing fissures associated with these utilitarian wares.
