Large Chinese Tang Dynasty Painted Pottery Earth Spirit with Oxford TL Test
This large and impressive pottery model of an earth spirit was made during the Tang Dynasty (AD 618 - 906). It is made from a relatively highly-fired orange-brown pottery that has been "cold painted" in a base coat of creamy-white pigment with darker pigments on top. This horned creature stands on an integral base astride a recumbent animal. The purpose of its fists, thrust-out chest, ferocious face and flames emanating from his back and head is to ward off evil spirits.
Height 60 cm (23.5 inches). This fine example of Tang Dynasty pottery sculpture is available to view at our gallery.
This earth spirit was tested in 1997 by Oxford Authentications, the only testers of ancient pottery accepted by all major dealers, auction houses and museums worldwide, and the Thermoluminescence Analysis Report that will accompany this item is shown; this confirms the date of manufacture as "between 800 and 1,300 years ago".
