Large Thai Impressed Pottery Jar

This large attractively-shaped jar is made from a gritty red pottery. It has impressed decoration around its shoulder and a band of applied "pie crust" decoration. This is a traditional type of jar used in Northern Thailand to contain fresh water. Much of its inner surface, and parts of the outer surface, are encrusted with a limescale-type deposit. This jar has surface wear, chipping to its base and inner rim edges and has lost a section of its pie-crust decoration. Dating such a jar is not easy but we do know it has been part of a local private collection for many years. We date it to mid 20th century although it could easily be older. Diameter 32.5 cm (12.75 inches), height 21.5 cm (8.5 inches). There is no repair or restoration.
