Fine Tall Chinese Neolithic Qijia Culture Pottery Jar with Oxford TL Test

This tall and attractively-shaped pottery vessel was made around 4,000 years ago by peoples of the Qijia Culture in eastern Gansu province, China dating from approx. 2050 - 1700 BC. It is relatively highly-fired. The lower surface has been decorated with repeated vertical lines whereas the upper surface has been burnished to a smooth finish. At the waist are two loop handles, with the surface of the body on the inside of the handles slightly depressed. It has a particularly wide flared mouth. There are a couple of "pock" marks to the surface due to small pieces of grit within the pottery. In places on the surface are the "calcified" traces of ancient root/plant growths from its long burial.

This is a large example of its type with a height of 31 cm (12.25 inches). This is a truly exceptional example in fine condition with no sign of restoration or repair.

As with many of our finer and rarer items, we have had this vessel tested by Oxford Authentications, the only testers of ancient pottery accepted by all major dealers, auction houses and museums worldwide, and the Thermoluminescence Analysis Report that will accompany this item is shown with our images; this confirms the date of manufacture as "between 2600 and 4100 years ago".

We bought this jar around 15 years ago. It has been in our private collection since then and not previously offered for sale.

For reference: we show a similar (but in our opinion inferior) example from the fine China Institute book "Dawn of the Yellow Earth, Ancient Chinese Ceramics from the Meiyintang Collection" by Regina Krahl, a book we highly recommend (ISBN 0-9654270-3-X).
