Chinese Han Dynasty Pottery Amphora (206 BC - AD 220)

A superbly conceived design; vessels of this general type have been found in tombs dating as far back as the Spring and Autumn Period (770-475 BC) and are thought by some archaeologists to be anthropomorphic, based on the female human form.

This particular example was made some 2,000 years ago during the Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 220), possibly earlier. This vessel has a smooth burnished surface. Around the neck are bands of lightly incised combed parallel lines and there are two "swirls" on each side of the main body. On the surface of each handle are swirling patterns. In places on both the outer and inner surfaces are mineralised deposits from long burial.

Height 17 cm (6.75 inches). Repairs are often seen on this type of vessel and although should not be ruled out, there are no immediate signs of such to this particular example; good condition as we hope our photos demonstrate.
