Tall Chinese Northern Qi Dynasty Painted Pottery Figure (AD 550 - 577)

This very rare and unusual painted pottery figure was made during the Northern Qi Dynasty (AD 550 - 577). It is made from a grey pottery that has been "cold painted" in various coloured pigments, very good traces of which still remain. Note the details of the clothing, the headgear and especially the facial features. In each hand is a purpose-made hole where originally would have been placed miniature weapons or banners, most likely made of wood and now long since rotted away and lost.

A good size with a height of 31 cm (12.25 inches). There is no sign of restoration or repair; an outstanding figure in fine condition.
