Large Chinese Han Dynasty Pottery Ox (206 BC - AD 220)

This large pottery model of an ox was made during the Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 220). It is made from a relatively high-fired grey pottery which has made it much more durable than lower-fired examples. It has been made in a two-piece mould with the two halves luted together prior to firing. It is in very good condition; although one horn has clearly been broken and re-stuck, there is no obvious sign of any other restoration or repair, as is confirmed by shining a torch inside the hollow body. Length 36 cm (14 inches), height 21 cm (8.25 inches).
