Small Vietnamese 15th Century Covered Box with Chinese Characters
This small box was made during the 15th century. The underglaze blue pattern is quite difficult to interpret - it seems to be of a landscape that includes Chinese characters. The surface wear suggests this may be shipwreck piece. Small boxes such as this were much prized to devotees of the Japanese tea ceremony. Diameter 4 cm. A couple of tiny chips but no repair or restoration.
This item is part of a recently acquired old English collection comprising mostly Ming Dynasty blue & white porcelain but also including a few earlier celadons and some South-East Asian ceramics.
