Vietnamese 15th Century Blue & White Covered Box
This very attractive covered box was made during the mid 15th century. It is quite "heavily-potted" and elaborately decorated in underglaze blue with a mixture of floral and geometric patterns. It is coated in a crackled glaze. Diameter 6.75 cm. Condition is good. The glaze has flaked very slightly at the edges. There is no repair or restoration.
Items such as this were, and still are, much revered amongst devotees of the tea ceremony. Many similar items are described and illustrated in the fine Oxford University Press book: "Vietnamese and Chinese Ceramics Used in the Japanese Tea Ceremony" by Hiromu Honda and Noriki Shimazu (ISBN 0195886070).
This particular item for sale is from a private collection of fine quality Vietnamese 15th century blue & white ceramics we acquired last year.
