Fine LARGE Vietnamese 15th Century Blue & White Dish / Charger (37.5 cm)
This large and impressive dish was made during the mid 15th century. It is "heavily-potted" and the underglaze decoration of a good deep blue colour features a lotus blossom surrounded by various bands and scrolls of lotus leaves and flowers. The underside wall is decorated with lotus leaf panels. The inside of the foot ring is coated in a shiny dark brown wash, typical of many Vietnamese pieces of this period.
This is a large dish with a diameter of 37.5 cm (14.75 inches). Unlike the majority of large Vietnamese dishes on the market today, this example has NOT been recovered from a shipwreck. There is some wear to the inner surface, clearly from use. There is some glaze "fritting" around the lower rim edge and to the underside rim is a chip; its nature and the glaze around the edge of the chip show this was clearly caused during firing due to an impurity in the clay. There are also a couple of chips to the foot ring but, again, the nature of these chips does suggest they were caused during manufacture. It is in fine condition with no restoration or repair and has a good deep ring when tapped.
