An Original Albumen Photograph of Yokohama by Felice Beato 1865 Edo Period
11 1/2 x 8 3/8 ins. (29.3 x 21.4 cms) This albumen photograph by the great photographer Felice Beato is catalogued in the Collection of Nagasaki University Library "Japanese Old Photographs of the Bakumatsu/Meiji Period" #777 with the following caption; Taken by Beato. "Dear Mrs. Kiyota's house near Yokohama on the Kanazawa Road, August 21, 1865 ". A house that looks like a farmhouse, built slightly above the road surrounded by trees. The roof looks thatched. Mrs.Kiyota may be a servant of Beato.
The size of the photograph in the Nagasaki collection is much smaller than the present example at 102 x 58 mm. Beato lived in Yokohama for several years and took many photographs of the city and environs. The date of the photo, 1865, is three years before the Meiji Restoration in 1868.
Most of Beato's photographs of Japan were laid down in albums and it is rare to find unmounted examples. The condition is very good with damage or repairs except for a tiny repaired tear at the lower right corner. There is an old stain on the lower reverse which has almost imperceptibly penetrated to the front lower left and is hardly noticeable due to the sepia colour of the photograph.
