Chinese Ming Dynasty Blue & White Porcelain Meiping

This porcelain vase, or meiping, was made during the latter part of the Ming Dynasty (AD 1368 – 1644). It is unusually “heavily-potted” and has been made in four sections that have been luted together at the narrowest and widest parts of the body, and at the neck. It is coated in a thick white glaze in which there are a few kiln scars. The underglaze cobalt blue floral decoration has fired more black than blue. The unglazed flat base has fired to a pale reddish-brown.

Height 20 cm (7.75 inches). Certainly not the finest example of Ming Dynasty porcelain, but its coarseness does, arguably, have a certain appeal ! Apart from a hairline crack to the base (see magnified image), more than likely caused during manufacture due to the thickness of the body, it is in very good condition with no repair or restoration.
