Chinese Blue & White Porcelain Bowl – Tek Sing Shipwreck c.1822

This bowl was recovered from the Tek Sing shipwreck, the cargo of which was sold at Nagel’s auctioneers in Germany in 2000. The underglaze blue decoration features a stamped pattern of what appears to be a mountainous countryside scene. It is coated in a finely-crackled glaze, the colour of which varies slightly in places. Such bowls were stacked on top of each other in the kiln and so the central inner surface remains unglazed in order to prevent them from fusing together during firing.

The majority of recovered shipwreck ceramics will of course have some degree of wear / damage / chips etc.. This, however, is an exceptional example in fine condition. Diameter 14.5 cm (5.75 inches). No repair or restoration.
