Vietnamese 15th Century Blue & White Double-Gourd Jar
This attractively-shaped small double-gourd jar was made during the 15th century. It is coated in a finely-crackled glaze and elaborately decorated in underglaze blue, the pattern featuring scrolling floral and lotus leaf patterns. Height 7.25 cm. It is in very good condition with no repair or restoration and just minor “nibbling” to the edge of the vulnerable mouth.
Items such as this were, and still are, much revered amongst devotees of the tea ceremony. Many similar items are described and illustrated in the fine Oxford University Press book: "Vietnamese and Chinese Ceramics Used in the Japanese Tea Ceremony" by Hiromu Honda and Noriki Shimazu (ISBN 0195886070).
This particular item for sale is from a private collection of fine quality Vietnamese 15th century blue & white ceramics we acquired last year.
