Thai 14th - 15th Century Sawankhalok Covered Footed Box
This fine stoneware box was made during the 14th - 15th centuries at one of the Sawankhalok kilns. The cover a lotus-bud handle and the lower section an integral foot. The underglaze decoration comprises various geometric patterns that are covered in a finely-crackled translucent pale greenish-blue glaze. The raised centre and handle of the cover, and the wall of the foot are coated in iron-brown.
Quite often such Thai boxes have mis-matched covers; there is no doubt whatsoever that this is the original cover for this box.
Diameter 10.75 cm (4.25 inches). It is in very good condition with no restoration or repair and just a tiny surface chip to the vulnerable edge of the cover.
