Rare Large Burmese 15th Century Celadon Stoneware Dish (Ex. Lammers’ Collection)

This impressive and heavily-potted stoneware dish was made during the 15th century. Decoration is minimal with a just a few simple incised lines around the inner surface. However, its outstanding feature is the crackled transparent green glaze. The dish has clearly sagged a little during firing and this has resulted in the glaze pooling to one side where there is a blueish, almost purple area where the glaze is at its thickest. On the underside of the dish in this area is a larger area of glaze, the colours ranging from a creamy-white to purple, reminiscent of Chinese Jun type glazes. This is the area where the glaze has flaked from the underside of the rim so perhaps this firing anomaly resulted in the glaze being softer than elsewhere on the dish. The unglazed centre of the base has fired to a reddish-brown, a feature of Burmese celadons.

A good size with a diameter of 34 cm (13.25 inches). Notwithstanding the aforementioned loss of glaze, this dish is in fine condition with no restoration or repair.

For information: This jar is from the Lammers Collection: see images for more details.

A similar sized Burmese celadon dish, coincidentally also with a blueish splash, is shown on page 147 of Roxanna Maude Brown’s book “The Ming Gap and Shipwreck Ceramics in Southeast Asia”.
