Thai 14th - 15th Century Sawankhalok Covered Box
This stoneware box was made during the 14th - 15th centuries at one of the Sawankhalok kilns. The underglaze decoration features an attractive floral scroll that encircles the body and shoulder, above and below which are bands of parallel lines. The surface is coated in a finely-crackled transparent greenish-blue glaze.
Quite often such Thai boxes have mis-matched covers; there is no doubt whatsoever that this is the original cover for this box.
Diameter 10 cm (4 inches). Condition is very good; to the edges of both the upper and lower sections are small “stress fractures”, but there is no repair or restoration.
